Colorado River Forecast Hits Record Low Amid Water Crisis
Colorado River Forecast Hits Record Low Amid Water Crisis
US · Published May 13, 2026
The Colorado River Basin is facing historically low water inflows this summer, with projections indicating only 800,000 acre-feet of water will flow into Lake Powell by July, according to Aspen Public Radio.
This figure represents just 13% of the reservoir's average supply and marks the lowest summer inflow in its history.
The dire forecast is attributed to record-low snowpack and a March heat wave, despite a cooler and wetter April.

Why It's Important?

The declining water levels in Lake Powell threaten hydroelectric power generation for multiple western states, potentially impacting millions of residents. The ongoing water crisis also exacerbates tensions between upper and lower basin states over water usage and conservation responsibilities. If emergency measures fail, the reservoir could reach critically low levels as early as this summer, further straining regional water resources and infrastructure.
